The start of the school year is right around the corner, students gear up to hit the books, sports, and social events. But amidst all the excitement, it’s easy to overlook something important: posture and spine health. Poor posture can lead to back pain, neck stiffness, and even long-term spinal issues. Luckily, with a few easy and simple adjustments students and educators can maintain a healthy back and spine throughout the school year.
First, let’s talk backpacks. When hunting for the right backpack try to opt for one with padded straps and multiple compartments to distribute weight evenly. Make sure you’re not carrying half your weight in books, supplies, or electronics! Also, if you can, use lockers to minimize the amount of time you carry a heavy weight on your back. In the classroom, make sure you are also sitting up straight with your feet flat on the floor and if you are working on a computer or laptop, try to position the screen at eye level. It’s the little things that we forgot about that can really impact or spine health and posture. Lastly, staying active and stretching is always key.
