Sitting all day for some people can feel natural or simply be part of their day-to-day routine. Even though sitting can be comfortable, staying in one position for long periods of time can impact your spine and the muscles that support it. Some of the most common concerns include increased pressure on the spinal discs, musculoskeletal stiffness and weakness, poor posture, reduced circulation, chronic discomfort, and tight hip flexors. Over time, spending too much time in one position can contribute to stiffness, muscle weakness, and discomfort in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. Poor sitting posture can also place additional stress on the structures that support your spine.
The good news is that there are simple things you can do to help reduce discomfort and support better spine health while sitting. Try taking frequent breaks every 30–60 minutes to stand up, walk around, or stretch. Using proper ergonomics and making sure your chair provides adequate support can also help maintain a more comfortable posture. A lumbar support pillow behind your lower back may provide additional support, especially if your chair does not naturally support the curve of your lower spine. It can also help to occasionally change positions throughout the day rather than remaining in the exact same position for hours at a time.
Sitting can be comfortable, but movement is important for maintaining a healthy spine. When possible, alternate between sitting and standing, take short walking breaks, and pay attention to how your body feels throughout the day. There is not necessarily one perfect sitting position for everyone—the bigger concern is staying in one position for too long. Making small changes throughout your workday can help reduce stiffness and discomfort and make it easier to maintain good spine health over time. If persistent back or neck pain continues despite making these changes, it may be worth speaking with a spine specialist to determine if there is an underlying cause.
