When to try injections for spine or joint pain?

When to try injections

“When should I consider injections for my spine or joint pain?” This is a common question for patients dealing with pain that does not seem to be going away. In many cases, injections may be considered after more conservative treatments, such as physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, rest, or activity modification, have not provided enough relief. If pain continues for several weeks and begins limiting your ability to work, sleep, exercise, or enjoy your normal daily activities, it may be time to speak with a physician about additional treatment options.

Depending on the source and location of your pain, different types of injections may be available. Epidural steroid injections can be used for certain types of spine-related pain and inflammation, while targeted joint injections may be considered for pain involving specific joints. These treatments are designed to deliver medication directly to or near the area causing symptoms. The goal is to reduce inflammation and pain, improve function, and potentially provide enough relief to allow you to participate more comfortably in physical therapy or other rehabilitation.

Injections can also serve a diagnostic purpose. When medication is delivered to a specific area and your symptoms improve, the response may provide your physician with additional information about where your pain is coming from. This information can be used along with your medical history, physical examination, and imaging to help develop a more precise treatment plan.

In some situations, injections may provide enough relief to help patients manage their symptoms without immediately moving toward surgery. However, injections are not the right treatment for everyone, and they do not permanently correct every underlying condition. Your physician will consider the cause and severity of your pain, your medical history, previous treatments, and your individual goals when determining whether an injection may be appropriate.

At Axis Spine & Orthopedics, our goal is always to match the right treatment to the right patient at the right time. If persistent spine or joint pain is affecting your quality of life, don’t feel like you have to simply live with it. Schedule a consultation with our team to discuss your symptoms and explore whether injection therapy or another treatment option may be right for you. Our goal is to help you manage your pain, improve your function, and get BACK to It.
